What Is SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Business Owners

Sneha Jasrasaria Updated 3 min read

Quick answer

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of making your website easy for Google and other search engines to find, understand and trust, so it shows up when people search for what you sell. It has three parts: technical health, helpful content and trust signals like reviews and links.

Key takeaways

  • SEO is about being the best answer to a search, not tricking Google
  • Technical health, content and trust are the three pillars
  • Start with your Google Business Profile and your main service pages
  • SEO builds over months, so start early and stay consistent

Every day, people in your city type things like “best cake shop near me” or “digital marketing agency in Guwahati” into Google. SEO decides whether your business appears in those results or someone else’s does.

How Google decides what to show

Google’s job is to show the most useful, trustworthy answer for each search. To do that, it does three things:

  1. Crawls the web to find pages.
  2. Indexes them, storing what each page is about.
  3. Ranks them for each search, based on relevance, quality and trust.

SEO is simply making sure your pages do well at each step.

The three pillars of SEO

1. Technical SEO

Can Google reach and read your site? This covers fast loading, a mobile-friendly design, secure HTTPS, a clean site structure and no broken pages. Our technical SEO basics post covers the essentials.

2. Content

Does your site answer what people are searching for? Each main service should have its own page that says what you do, who it is for, where you work, what it costs or how pricing works, and how to get started.

3. Trust (authority)

Does the rest of the web vouch for you? Reviews, mentions on other websites, links from local directories and news sites, and real case studies all tell Google your business is genuine.

Local SEO: the fastest win for most businesses

If customers come to you or you serve one city, local SEO matters most. That starts with a complete Google Business Profile, the same name, address and phone number everywhere, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Read our guide to showing up in “near me” searches.

What SEO is not

  • It is not stuffing keywords into every line.
  • It is not buying hundreds of cheap links.
  • It is not a one-time setup.

These shortcuts can get a site pushed down instead of up.

Your first five steps

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile.
  2. Make one clear page per service, with a short answer at the top.
  3. Add your city and area naturally where it fits.
  4. Ask every happy customer for a Google review.
  5. Set up Google Search Console so you can see what people search to find you.

How long until you see results?

Fixes to your Google profile can show results within weeks. Ranking new pages for competitive searches usually takes a few months. Our post on how long SEO takes explains what to expect.
